PERSPECTIVE: Life v Eternity

PerspectiveMilan door
“All that Pleases is but for a Moment.”

“All that Troubles is but for a Moment.”

“That Only is Important which is Eternal.”

These are the inscriptions which span the splendid arches of the triple doorways of Milan Cathedral, with the last mentioned one on the central door.

Life and the brevity of life should always be considered with a perspective on eternity, just as the inscriptions on those ancient doors of Milan Cathedral.

James 4:14
You do not know what will happen tomorrow.
For what is your life?
It is even a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

1 Chronicles 29:15 NLT
We are here for only a moment,
visitors and strangers in the land as our ancestors were before us.
Our days on earth are like a passing shadow, gone so soon without a trace.

It is all about perspective . . .

To a woman, a pearl is a jewel that can be worn on the finger, neck, or ear. To a chemist, a pearl is a mixture of aragonite and calcite. To a poet, it is a “teardrop of the sea.” To a biologist, it is simply a secretion inside the shells of certain molluscs. To a believer, a pearl is a marvel of God’s creation.

What do you see when you look at life?

The Apostle Paul reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven, not on earth

Philippians 3:20 NLT
But we are CITIZENS OF HEAVEN, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.
And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Saviour
(see also Eph 2:19)

Because of this we have a different perspective . . .

1 John 2:15-17 NLT
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you,
for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.  For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure,
a craving for everything we see,
and pride in our achievements and possessions.
These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave.

Colossians 3:1-3 NLT
Since you have been raised to new life with Christ,
set your sights on the realities of heaven,
where Christ sits in the place of honour at God’s right hand.
Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.

2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT
So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now;
rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.
For the things we see now will soon be gone,
but the things we cannot see will last forever.

All that is in the world, both good and bad, is temporary; it will pass away some day.  It is not worthy of our obsessive attention.  Only when we climb to the heights of heaven in our mind and emotion, and view life through the lens of eternity, we begin to see the purpose of life and truly appreciate those things that matter.

That only is important which is eternal”

The inscription on the central doorway at Milan Cathedral shows the proper emphasis on our life, according to The Word of God and is divine encouragement to us.

Thy life was given for me,
Thy blood, O Lord was shed,
That I might ransomed be
And quickened from the dead.
Thy life was given for me:
What have I given for Thee?

O let my life be given,
My years for Thee be spent;
World-fetters all be riven
And joy with suffering blent.
Thou gavest Thyself for me:
I give myself to Thee.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

    Hello again Angela

    I just re-read this post. Two different things struck me today;

    1. 1 John 2:15-17 NLT espsecially “the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure,
a craving for everything we see”.

Isn’t hat such a perfect analogy of where most of us are today?

To think when this was written there would have been far less consumerism, but the Spirit has seen to lead John to record theses words for us today.

Then lastly, you’ve chosen words by one of my favourite hymn writers. We once saw her tomb stone whilst on holiday, and I ended buying a book all about her life.

    Greetings from Belgium

    • I certainly agree about the consumerism of today. It shows the dissatisfaction experienced by most people.

The old hymn writers really had something, didn’t they? Unlike many of the modern Christian songs. I really appreciate most of the hymns by your modern hymn writer Stuart Townend.

Angela, your article fits nicely with a radio play I listened to yesterday. I hope you can listen to it, I was rejoicing that in this day and age something this good was allowed on our best UK Radio station.

  6. Angela, this is exactly what God has been teaching me lately that it is all in what you are focusing on Deb. I am happy to say I am learning to look through the lens of eternity more times than not now.

    • God knows exactly what we need to learn, and He undertakes in such a way that we learn according to His direction. He changes us and continues His work of changing us as He molds us into the image of Christ.
We serve an incredibly amazing God who delights to bless and use His blood-bought, adopted children.

    Angela,

You are so right about the temporary and uncertain aspect of this world. Looking back over my life, almost all the events that have taken place I did not foresee in my youth. Almost all of my plans and the entire planned course of my life has ended up being entirely different from what I was planning on when I was in my teens. Truly, the length and events of our lives are so very temporary and changeable!

Thank the Lord we can KNOW with certainly what will take place in eternity to come. If we have trusted in our Lord we will enter into eternity in the presence of the Lord and remain with Him forever! If we have never come to a saving knowledge of Him, we can also be certain of our destiny. We will end up separated from our Lord and facing eternal punishment.

May we all read your posting and use this temporary lifetime we have been given to prepare for the certainty of eternity that will come upon all of us.

Lord bless you Angela. Thanks again for glorifying the Lord by reminding us of what is truly important and ever-lasting!

    • Thank you for adding those truths on eternity Rob.
Indeed, everyone has to face eternity and everyone should consider what eternity has in store for them. Praise God that my eternity is secured in Christ and that (soon) I will be with Him for all eternity.

  8. You can have all this world just give me Jesus. It is easy to say. I stood in a department store yesterday looking at tents. I thought to myself, “How easy would it be to let go my home and go live in a tent for my faith like my brothers and sisters in Mosul.” Losing all this world is still a painful process I have more growing to do.

    • JE I don’t think I could live in a tent at this stage of my life, but I KNOW there is much I could live without. This world still has a hold and it is too easy to get ‘comfortable’

Thankfully, the time is soon coming when we will be totally free from these ties.
      Soon and very soon . . .
