which worldWilliam Kelly (1821-1906) was an outstanding student of the Bible whose scholarship and spirituality made him a real power for God in Great Britain at the close of the 1800s. His library contained 15,000 books and he had detailed knowledge of each. Kelly was a prolific author and the titles of his own writings fill nearly ten pages in the British Museum catalogue.

Kelly had once helped a young relative prepare for Trinity Colleges in Dublin and in this way he came to the attention of the professors there. They offered him a huge salary and urged him to take up work at the college. When Kelly showed a distinct lack of enthusiasm for their suggestion, they were nonplussed and one asked him “Mr Kelly, aren’t you interested in making a name for yourself in the world?”

To which Kelly simply replied, “Which world, gentlemen?”

1 John 2:15-16 NLT
DO NOT LOVE THIS WORLD, NOR THE THINGS IT OFFERS YOU,
for when you love the world,
YOU DO NOT HAVE THE LOVE OF THE FATHER IN YOU.
For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure,
a craving for everything we see,
and pride in our achievements and possessions.

These are not from the Father, but are from this world.

James 4:4 NLT
Don’t you realize that friendship with the world
makes you an enemy of God?

I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world,
you make yourself an enemy of God.

Philippians 1:27 NLT
Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven,
conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.

Shortly before his death, Kelly said
“There are three things real —
the Cross, the enmity of the world, and the love of God”

If we were asked which world means the most to us, we would no doubt give a resounding reply that God comes first . . .    . . .   but . . .    . . .

balance scalesquestion
Suppose we could measure our reactions and actions, and our thoughts, motives and attitudes, and our time and our zeal, and place them on balance scales – one side for this world and the other for God – which side would be heavier?

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

There’s a lot to be said for living simply. Sadly we win the western world are all too easily drawn in by the allure of “stuff” and it’s hard not to be tainted by the pleasures of this world. having started reading Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress I can quickly see I haven’t his zeal, nor conviction. It’s all there in theory, but in practice?

This is really good, Mentor Angela. It has me looking at those things that I may think are for God, and asking Him to reveal my motives. Thank you so much!! God bless you and yours!

May we all share the same desires as Brother Kelly… to live our life here for the privilege of receiving rewards and laying them at His feet there! Lord bless you Angela. Thanks for another great reminder.

    • What an amazing experience that is going to be . . . laying our rewards at His feet. Only HE is worthy to receive glory and honour. May we give it to Him in this life that others may see Him and come to know, love and serve Him.
