John SungJOHN SUNG looked down and saw himself in a coffin and heard a voice declare “John Sung is dead”

John Sung’s father was pastor of the local Church in China, and young John helped in the ministry and even preached. He was called “Little Pastor” by the people.

John Sung was a brilliant student and in 1920 he was sent to America to study, having been offered numerous scholarships. He completed a Master of Science at Ohio State University in only 9 months. He was offered a scholarship to study medicine at Harvard but entered a doctoral program in chemistry at Ohio, completing hisPhD in just 21 months. His essays and research are still used in the University today.

He was the first Chinese to earn a Ph.D
and was hailed as “Ohio’s most famous student”

Famous? Yes, he had fame, but he had no peace and no joy and he suffered bouts of deep depression.

John Sung changed.

John Sung became a renowned Chinese Christian evangelist
who played an instrumental role in the revival movement among the Chinese in Mainland China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia during the 1920s and 1930s.

How did it happen?

It was at Union Theological Seminary in New York – 10th February 1927 – that John Sung had this life changing experience, and he claimed that day as his spiritual birthday.

open coffin
JOHN SUNG looked down
and saw himself in a coffin
and heard a voice declare
John Sung is dead.
John Sung is dead to self
but alive to Christ

He heard the angels singing.
Then the corpse began to stir
and John Sung was alarmed to see the angels start to weep.

He cried out
“Don’t weep angels!
I will remain dead to self and live only for Christ!

John Sung woke from his dream but he was a changed man.

That day John Sung became a different person, with different objectives and motivations. He started to preach fervently to students and lecturers, many of whom were liberal thinkers. John Sung was confined in an insane asylum for 193 days, during which time he read through the entire Bible 40 times. That time of Scriptural reading and spiritual renewal laid the foundations for one of the major revivals of the 20th century.

Sung proved to be a zealous and compelling preacher. His name spread throughout China and soon to other regions as well, through South East Asia. Sung’s Bible messages were focused on the need for repentance.

By 1936, it is believed more than 100,000 Chinese
were converted through his ministry.

Mark 8:34 NKJV
Jesus said to them
“Whoever desires to come after Me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross,
and follow Me”

Galatians 2:20 NKJV
I have been crucified with Christ;
it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;
and the life which I now live in the flesh
I live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave Himself for me.

John Sung counted himself as dead – dead to self.

John Sung lived for Christ – allowing Christ to live through Him.

Countless thousands were reached with the message of the Gospel.

questionquestionWhat difference would we see in the world
if we counted ourselves

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

    Some powerful truths here.

  2. Oh! I know this call and this dream well Angela. I hear it everyday and must remind myself and my ever stirring flesh, “You are dead and yet I live to Christ.”
There are days I still complain to God about it and He just faithfully reminds me of the portion of the gospels you quoted, “Whoever desires to come after Me,let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me”
I am thankful He never gives up on the reminders. I need them.

  3. Thank you for sharing this powerful story!

What an excellent story! This young man was being saved for his Godly purpose, and just at the right time, God put him to work in his greatest of accomplishments on this earth…to spread the gospel message.

Dead to self, alive to Christ. That’s the way it works!

    • It certainly is a great privilege to have the omnipotent creator God live and work in us, using us to complete the work of Christ on earth. I agree our greatest privilege is to share the Word of God with another and to lead them to faith in Christ. It is ALL His work, but He allows us the joy of being used by Him.

That is so well put! The “world” can’t understand such words as these…being “used” by someone and considering it a privilege!

But they are the very ones we need to seek out as advocates for the Lord. We sow the seeds, Good decides the increase.

We have great blessings as His children. Now, if only more of the world could see that…

Thank you for your very insightful reply!

some of what I just wrote didn’t come out right– I mean as long as we live in a body of fleash we will continually grow in Christ,IF we read/study the WORD, pray withoout ceasing! (sorry I have a migraine :( )

    Sweet sister Angela,
This is a beautiful reminder that each of us who claim the name of Christ and are purchased by the blood of Jesus, must die to our sinful old nature. Paul wrote in 2 Cor. 15:31 “…I die daily”. I believe we must “submit to the will of God daily”.
When we are reborn as adopted children into God’s family….our old nature (the flesh I so much hate within myself) still exists, BUT we grow more like Christ and less of ourselves as long as we reside in this body of flesh.
This is a wonderful amazing story of just what the grace of Almighty God is constantly able to do in anyone’s life.
Praying for you and hubby’s health and for beautiful blessings from above!

    • >>> “This is a wonderful amazing story of just what the grace of Almighty God is constantly able to do in anyone’s life”
Amen Stephanie. Isn’t it such an enormous privilege to have the omnipotent, creator God at work in our lives and through our lives? We are such fools if we hold back from full submission to Him.

Angela, you certainly pull out some great stories – and remind us of what it should be like to be a Christian. I’ve never heard of John Sung.

Please be encouraged there are still faithful servants working throughout Asia. My son (and his YWAM team) were able to lead three souls to The Lord only last Sunday.

In the last week I have heard of many more great stories on how lives are being transformed in Russia (may of those involved working at great personal risk – and one was pleased to get the chance to witness to Policeman who had detained him for his faith).

    The good work continues.

    • Yes, Stephen, God is certainly working in countries we used to think of as being heathen, particularly in Korea and China. There are also amazing stories coming out of Muslim and Arab countries.
      Keep looking UP . . .

  8. Kim says:

Thank you for sharing that powerful testimony and thank you for visiting ‘Unwalled”….feel welcome to stop by again at any time….God bless you and your ministry.

  9. Rob Barkman says:

Thanks for sharing Bro Sung’s story. Another example of God’s most amazing grace at work! Lord bless you Angela. I trust you and Myles are continuing to be strengthened physically and in Christ.

    • Thanks Rob. I wonder what God would do through the lives of each of us if we allowed Him full control, as did John Sung.

Yes, Rob, we are strengthened in Christ and know His keeping power every day. I have been told I will get no more movement in my ankle, but doctors have been wrong before today. We trust Him.

  10. This is a very inspiring and engaging post, Angela. I truly enjoyed reading it. The John Sung story is a testament that God can change anyone. And once Christ touched you, then you become new.. Like Paul and countless others, John Sung never returned to his old ways after conversion.

Thank so much for sharing , Angela. God blesses.

    • Thanks Noel
I could never understand how any blood-bought, adopted child of God could return to their old ways. I can only presume they’ve never really trusted Christ and allowed Him to live in them. In Christ ALL our needs are met. In Christ we are complete. In Christ we know His peace, love, joy and we are completely satisfied.

Life with Christ is an endless hope.
Life without Christ is a hopeless end.

  11. Pure Glory says:

Killing the flesh and living for Jesus. Sung’s testimony is inspiring.
