STUNTED GROWTH: Novelty or tragedy

stunted growthHave you ever seen a bonsai tree? The best ones have all the features and appearances of a fully-grown tree but only have a small fraction of the size.

stunted 1Bonsai trees may be several years old but remain in small pots and are only about twelve inches high. A Texas ebony tree was dug from the banks of the Rio Grande just a few miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The tree was no different from the other trees when dug out but was kept miniature by regularly clipping and pinching off its limbs. When potted, most of its roots were cut off and every two years the process is repeated. The small pot greatly limits its root development, so it would die in one day without water.

Bonsai trees are pretty for decoration, interesting to look at, but they are not good for much else. The bonsai Texas ebony will never shade a house, nor will a bonsai olive tree produce edible olives.

Some Christians are like bonsai trees. Their spiritual growth has been stunted. Their spiritual roots have been clipped. The harsh “sun” of this world can quickly bring them to the point of spiritual death because of their shallow and limited knowledge of God’s Word. There has been time and opportunity for maturation and fruitfulness, but with spiritual growth restricted, there is only a dwarfed Christian.

stunted 2When a TREE
doesn’t grow,
it is a NOVELTY.

When a CHRISTIAN
doesn’t grow,
it is a TRAGEDY.

If I took a bonsai olive tree out of its small pot
and planted it in good rich soil,

it would begin to grow and with reasonable time and care,
it would produce olives.

The bonsai Christian can grow also.
He can allow his roots to grow deep in the Word of God
and thereby take spiritual nourishment.
Properly nourished, the Christian will mature and bear fruit.

2 Peter 3:18
But grow in grace,
and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:22
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word,
that ye may grow thereby:

Colossians 3:16 NLT
Let the Word of Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives

Colossians 3:1-3  NLT
Since you have been raised to new life with Christ,
set your sights on the realities of heaven,
where Christ sits in the place of honour at God’s right hand.
Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 2:7
Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith

Ephesians 4:13-14
Till we all come in the unity of the faith,
and of the knowledge of the Son of God,
unto a perfect man,
unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
That we henceforth not be as children.

Or as the Amplified Bible puts it . . .
until we all attain oneness in the faith
and in the comprehension of the full and accurate knowledge
of the Son of God,
that we might arrive at the completeness of personality
which is nothing less than
the standard height of Christ’s own perfection,
the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ
and the completeness found in Him.
So then, we may no longer be children,
tossed to and fro between chance gusts of teaching

 Eph 4_13

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

Aloha, Angela! Thank you for always encouraging me by reading my posts! Your teachings of the Word with emphasis on spiritual maturity and preparation for the return of the Lord are what my husband writes about on his blog. Don’t know if you’ve had a chance to visit ‘God’s Hidden Nuggets for the End Times’ http://drgoldsite.wordpress.com GOD BLESS YOU! \o/

  2. this is so good Angela. I think the greatest tragedy with pot bound Christians is that generally speaking it is not someone else who forces them into the pot. We hem ourselves in. We create our own limitations and then try to blame it on others or worse on God.

Perhaps the greatest issue facing the Western church, stunted Christians who have little depth, but simply grasp at God’s love and relax in that as though nothing needs doing. By the way are you get stinger each week?

    • Stinger? Thanks for the correction. Yes, I feel stronger and am able to do more, but I can only hobble with half steps, which is hard on the back.
My ankle will not move forward from a right angle. I am still having physio and use a stretching splint a few hours every day, but am not achieving any more movement. The ankle is still very swollen and this may take 6-12 months to go down. We won’t know until then if anything can be done.

It is so very easy, in today’s day and age, to get our sights off of Christ and His Word and place them on the many allurements around us. By God’s grace, out of appreciation knowing we are saved and eternally secure, may we continue with our eyes on the Lord and His Word in our hearts!

Thanks for a great reminder Angela, Lord bless you.

    • Amen Rob. Our senses are bombarded with satan’s enticements. Even a trip to the supermarket means our eyes and ears are going to be affronted by unwholesomeness. Praise God for His protection and for His victory! May we be faithful to always seek His power to overcome.

I loved how you showed this, Mentor Angela! It is a tragedy but so thankful that there is the remedy of yet sinking our roots into the deep soil of His word. He is so faithful! Thank you and God bless you as you keep growing in Him!

    • Thanks Debbie. One of the greatest blessings we have is the assurance of our acceptance with God and the sure knowledge that He WILL continue the work He has started in us and will bring us to completion.
      What an incredibly amazing God!
