ALL GONE! Nothing lasts forever

The Pharos lighthouse of Alexandria, built in the third century BC, was regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Standing 450ft or 137m it was one of the tallest man-made structures on earth for many centuries. Pharos served as a prototype for all later lighthouses in the world.

Following the death of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy I Soter announced himself King in 305BC and shortly after commissioned the construction of the lighthouse. It took 12 years to complete and was finished during the reign of his son, the second Ptolemy (Ptolemy II Philadelphus)

Ptolemy chose the architect Sostratus to design that mammoth structure. Ptolemy insisted that the building should bear his inscription as a personal memorial, and of course his order had to be obeyed. However, Sostratus didn’t think the king should get all the credit for his work and devised a plan.

Sostratus put the title of Ptolemy on the front of the lighthouse in a thick plaster, which would be eye-catching at first but later would be worn away by the elements. Secretly he cut his own name in the granite underneath the plaster. For decades the sea dashed against the inscription and gradually eroded the plaster façade, until it was finally obliterated, leaving the name “Sostratus” standing in bold relief!

While the Pharos lighthouse stood for centuries and gained fame, it was badly damaged by three earthquakes between 956 and 1323, and before long it became an abandoned ruin.

The lighthouse was gone.
Ptolemy’s name was gone.
Sostratus’ name was gone.

 Every thing in this world
will perish.
All our possessions
will one day end
on the rubbish dump.
