When I posted that I would be away from wordpress for a while, I was simply allowing myself a break and time to catch up with backlog of other matters, expecting to be back mid January. I had no idea of what lay ahead and certainly did not envision 3 months of hospitalisation, with most of that time unable to move.
Briefly:
- I missed a bottom step or two and crash landed.
- I dislocated my right ankle, with my foot hanging off the end of my leg. There were three fractures in ankle and leg. Eight screws and a metal plate were inserted a week later.
- The skin and flesh across the ankle died and needed surgical removal and a skin graft
- Amputation was avoided
- There were also a few bouts of tachycardia and atrial fibrillation
- There was almost no movement in the ankle joint
- Weeks of physiotherapy and rehabilitation followed and continues, now at home
I praise God for His continued presence, peace and intervention throughout
weeks of pain and frustration,
and for the healing which is continuing.
Psalm 28:7
The Lord is my strength and my shield.
My heart trusted in Him and I am helped.
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices
and with my song I will praise Him.
I am now “walking” with the aid of a wheelie-walker and can hobble around the house on my own. My right heel will not touch the floor and my right foot is unable to reach behind me, but I am able to ‘walk’ in shoes with a 5cm wedge heel. Thanks to excellent physiotherapists I am improving. I am using a splint with adjustable straps to tighten the ankle and pull the toes up and I am gaining some movement. I call the splint my torture device, but it IS working and I look forward to being able to walk and to drive again in the not-too-distant future.
Meanwhile, sitting with my leg down causes pain, so sitting at the computer is not advisable. However, I have missed my wordpress friends and hope now to be able to spend some time here via my old laptop.
I haven’t blogged in a few months because I was sooo busy with life, so I’m just now learning of your situation! Praying for your complete healing in Jesus Name, that by now you have been able to rise up & walk!! Amen!

I couldn’t call it “walk” but praise God I can hobble with half steps. My right ankle will not allow a forward bend – yet! – but it is slowly improving; just one or two degrees at a time.

I just had my 65 (Medicare!) Birthday at the beginning of this month, and when the kids where I teach, say, “Come on, play dodge ball with us!!” I just stare at them!! I wasn’t that athletic when I was younger, so “No!”

65 seems young to me. I’m almost 78 but I’m not thinking about that yet . . .

I had my Birthday lunch with two of my dear friends who are 75 and 80 years young…such an inspiration to me…God doesn’t want us to pull up a rocking chair and watch the world go by…but, be involved in His kingdom work!!! Amen!

Remembering again an old favourite verse . . .
Let me burn out for Thee, dear Lord;
Burn and wear out for Thee.
Don’t let me rust, or my life be a failure, dear Lord to Thee.
Take me and all I have, dear Lord,
And get me so close to Thee
That I feel the throb of the deep heart of God
Until I burn out for Thee.

I had been thinking about you lately and wondering when you would be back. Wow, certainly not the type of break you were thinking of. Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. Saying a prayer for you.

Thanks Gloria. No, certainly not a “break” I had considered.

Angela, we missed you – but I guessed you were disciplining yourself, and trying to master a world wide web compulsion!
I often think about stopping myself. Perhaps 4 months off would be a good discipline.
I hope you get stronger each day, and avoid any further rapid confrontations with the ground.

Believe me I am trying to avoid any more confrontations! I wouldn’t want a repeat!
Praise God for continued progress – beyond the expectations of the professionals – but there is still a long way to go.

Wow, I had no idea what you were going through! I thought I was missing your posts because I stopped using my WordPress Reader to follow & read fellow blogger posts (was taking too much time for me personally). What you’ve been through… I’m thankful you’re on the mend, and you are in my daily prayers.

Thanks Anna. I actually thought of you often while I was in hospital, as the way you handle your own times of trouble is an inspiration. I have enjoyed such good health all my life, that this was quite a shock.
Praise God for continued improvement!

I was starting to wonder about you. Some bloggers take some time off and never return. I suggest never announcing again you’re taking some time off; maybe announce you will be posting twice a week for the 15 years!
In the meantime I have finished writing my book. I’ll ask for your mailing address in a couple of months and send you a copy personally.

Thanks Clark. Little did I know what was ahead when I announced some time off but I’m glad I did, since it saved friends some concern. I’m now improving beyond the expectations of the professionals.
A book? Congrats! I’ll check your blog soon.
