IT COULDN’T BE TRUE! But there was no mistake.

No mistakeA young boy from the New York slums was sent to the country by the *Fresh Air Fund.  He arrived late at night and was shown into a bedroom in the host farmhouse and told he was to sleep there.  It was like another world to the young chap who had spent his whole life in the slums, usually sleeping on the streets or in a dark hallway. He had never had a bedroom or even slept in a proper bed. In fact, he couldn’t remember ever being alone in a room before.

He looked with wonder at the neatly made bed with its beautiful thick spread and pillows, and ‘knew’ it was some sort of mistake. For just a brief moment he dared to dream and he relished the once-in-a-lifetime experience.  He felt the luxurious softness of the bed and dared to sit there for just a brief moment. Then, fearing someone would catch him, he curled up on the floor against the wall.  Even being in a room was more than he could expect, and surely a mistake, but he soon fell asleep.

In the early morning, before heading to milk the cows, the farmer’s wife peeped in to make sure he was alright. She was aghast!  Only by much mental and physical persuasion was she able to convince him the bed was for him and persuade him to get into the bed for a few more hours sleep before she called him for a hearty breakfast.

Alas!  How many of God’s children are like that little fellow . . .

We have been taken out of the old life and given a new life.

2 Corinthians 5:17  NLT
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Colossians 1:12-13  NLT
always thanking the Father
who has enabled you to share in the inheritance
that belongs to his people, who live in the light.
For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness
and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son

Ephesians 2:19  NLT
So now you are no longer strangers and foreigners.
You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people.
You are members of God’s family.

Are we “sleeping on the floor”
or, as we should be, resting in the Father’s love, joy and peace
and the abundance of our new life in Christ?

2 Peter 1:3-4  NLT
By his divine power,
God has given us everything we need for living a Godly life.
We have received all of this by coming to know Him,
the One who called us to Himself
by means of his marvellous glory and excellence.
And because of His glory and excellence,
He has given us great and precious promises.
These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature
and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

Philippians 4:19  NLT
And this same God will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Each blood-bought, adopted child of the living God is precious to Him.
We are
“heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ”  [Romans 8:17]

We dishonour God when we live as a spiritual pauper instead of as a treasured child of the King of kings who has given us all the resources of heaven and the resident Holy Spirit to enable us to live to His glory.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

I found your site this morning along with others great work. Loved reading the story of the young boy and realised hey I know that boy. Great story

As I am growing in Christ, I find many things I have to ask Him to re- teach me. For I know not how to love Him until I first receive and apply His love. I know not how to receive His goodness until I first recognize my God, who is good. Thankfully, He has balanced my life and taught me to recognize Him. I now see the God who is good, even His goodness in me. Truly, He has blessed me above and beyond all I could ask or think. Thank you for the lovely story and the very needed reminded of who God says I am.

This post made me smile, I sleep on the floor nearly 50% of the time – even with a comfy bed to hand. Having had nasal problems for most of my life I sometimes need to the cooler air at floor level. Thanks for your ongoing Back to Basics Christianity, so many of us forget what a calling we share.

    • We are all so stupid at times Stephen. All too often I go my own way, ignoring the all-powerful help that is mine for the taking. Praise God He is still there when I give up and turn to Him and receive of His abundance.

We serve an incredibly amazing God who delights to work in us and through us as we submit to Him.

(Have you tried sleeping with a small electric fan blowing cool air across your face? Might be more comfortable than sleeping on the floor)

How many of us are really afraid to take what we are so freely given?
    Great story.

    • I think we are fearful of having to ‘give up’ something – and how stupid that is! We should KNOW that God only wants the very, very best for us, and that whatever He gives will be far, far better than anything we hold on to.

Well said Angela! This a great reminder of what we have in Christ.

  7. Angela, this is an excellent confidence builder. It is time Christians stop acting like victims and claim the victory Christ gave us. Many of us act as though we are still chained to the the Yoke of bondage.

Thanks so much for sharing this exce

    • Thanks Noel. If I was God, I would get upset with me for not accepting and using all He has to offer, but praise Him, He just keeps on blessing abundantly and continues to change me and mould me into His image.

We serve an incredibly amazing God!

  8. Debbie says:

Thank you for such a precious reminder of Whose we are and how much He desires for us to live in His abundant love. God bless you, Mentor Angela!

    • Thanks Debbie. He has freely given us EVERYTHING we need to live victoriously for Him. The fault is ours in not using what He has given in abundance.

How are you Debbie? I really miss your ‘simple poems’ and continue to pray for you and yours.

  9. Pure Glory says:

What needless pain we endure because we choose to live beneath our privileges as children of God!

  10. Rob Barkman says:

Thank you, Angela, for a much needed reminder for all of us…. the amazing thing is this… we can only comprehend a small amount of the great change that the Lord has wrought in our lives and the great blessings He has promised to us. Yet, it is just as you say, we do not even claim the few promises we understand. How amazing it will be to enter into heaven realize ALL His promises to us and praise Him eternally for them.

    • How wonderful it will be when we worship Him without any distractions and realise the enormity of all we have in Christ! We are one day closer!
Meanwhile, even though we accept and rejoice in so many of His blessings, we will continue to live as comparative paupers until that day . . . NOT because He withholds anything, but because WE don’t accept His promises and act on them by faith. Thankfully, He continues to shower us with the abundance of His blessings as He continues His work in us.
