POINTING THE FINGER – can our ‘neighbours’ accuse us?

Pointing the fingerHenry Ford did not invent the automobile. Henry Ford did not invent the assembly line. Henry Ford was responsible for transforming the automobile into an innovation that profoundly shaped the 20th century.  He, together with many other intelligent men, over a period of seven years,  perfected the assembly line by installing driven conveyor belts that could produce a Model T in ninety-three minutes.  More than any other one person, Henry Ford and his forward-thinking genius continues to affect our lives today.

Henry Ford left us many words of wisdom ~ among my favourites ~
#  Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again,
this time more intelligently.

#  Obstacles are those frightful things you see
when you take your eyes off your goal.

#  You can’t build a reputation on what you are GOING to do.

The spiritual applications to these are obvious and many Scriptures come to mind, but I am thinking especially of another challenging word from him, spoken to a close friend.

When Henry Ford purchased a large insurance policy, the Detroit Times blazoned the fact.  A very close friend read the story and asked Henry if it was true. He asked why, since they were close personal friends and he had been selling insurance for many years, the policy had not been purchased from him.

Henry Ford simply replied, “You never asked me”

My first thought, on reading this, was in the words of
James 4:2  You have not because you ask not.

We have so many precious promises from God that He will supply our needs, but sometimes we miss out simply because we do not turn to Him, trusting Him to keep His Word.  We have not because we ask not.

Soon, my thoughts turned in another direction
as I remembered a poem I had read and I was forced to ask myself
How many people do I know
who will be able to point the finger at me
and say ‘you never asked me about my spiritual condition’.

I know what is recorded in this poem this could never happen,
but is there someone who, if it was possible,
could POINT THE FINGER at us and echo these words?

FROM ETERNITY’S MORNING
You lived next door to me for years.
We shared our dreams, our joys, our tears.
A friend you were to me in deed –
A friend who helped me when in need.

What sadness then, my friend, to find
That after all you weren’t so kind.
The day my life on earth did end,
I found you weren’t a faithful friend.

For all those years we spent on earth,
You never talked of second birth.
You never spoke of my lost soul
And of the Christ Who’d make me whole.

I plead today from hell’s cruel fire
And tell you now my last desire.
You cannot do a thing for me;
No words today my bonds will free.

But do not err my friend, again,
Do all you can for souls of men.
Plead with them now quite earnestly,
Lest they be cast in hell with me.

Lord, open my eyes to see others in their lost condition. Open my ears to hear Holy Spirit’s leading.  Open my lips to speak His words.  Open my heart to love all I meet and to long for their salvation.

2 Corinthians 5:19-20  NASB
Now all these things are from God,
who reconciled us to Himself through Christ
and GAVE US THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION,
namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself,
not counting their trespasses against them,
and HE HAS COMMITTED TO US THE WORD OF RECONCILIATION.
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ,
as though God were making an appeal through us.

 2 Timothy 4:1-2  NASB
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,
who is to judge the living and the dead,
and by His appearing and His kingdom:
PREACH THE WORD;
be ready in season and out of season;
reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.

 1 Corinthians 9:16  NASB
I am under compulsion;
for woe is me if I do not preach the gospel.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

  1. Another bold, simple post. Lots of spot on scripture redeeming a personal observation written in a clear unpretentious manner, convicting and comforting exhortation.

This one is a bit like reading Kings or Chronicles. henry Ford may have been a great visionary, but he also orchestrated some horrendous acts to ensure the production line kept running. Folk seen to organise workers against the management would often get a “visitation” by the heavy mob to teach them a lesson. These types are good, but they only go so far.

    • Agreed, Stephen. I wasn’t suggesting we copy Henry Ford’s lifestyle, or trying to lift him as a example to follow, but we can admire his stick-a-bility and learn a lot from him and a few of his sayings, especially ones about failure and persistence.

In particular, I was challenged by his simple response of “You never asked me” and wondered how many times my Father God could say that to me. Then I thought of people who could point the finger at me for not telling them the Good News of the Gospel.

There is a lot of danger in trying to compare ourselves with, or follow any human being, no matter how ‘good’ they are. There is only ONE standard – the Lord Jesus. May we be persistent in pointing others to Him.

So good. I’m glad you shared some of Henry Ford’s sayings with us. Gonna jot them down. They’re keepers. Thanks for another great post.

Angela, indeed evangelism keeps a Christian alive in faith for if your faith means anything, it is worth sharing.

    • Amen Evelyn. When becoming a blood-bought, adopted child of the living God has been such a life-changing blessing and brings peace and joy even in the most troubled times of life, how can we do other than share the truths with others?
May we always be ready to speak about our faith and point others to Jesus.

    • Thank you for the nomination sagescenery. I appreciate it and feel honoured, but as I am sure you will understand, I pass the honour to my Lord, because it is ALL His work.
It seems I am constantly playing ‘catch-up’ here. I have a number of other awards I need to accept and will add yours and get back as soon as I can. Thank you for your encouragement.

  6. Splendid! This one really hits home, Angela. I especially like this: “How many people do I know
who will be able to point the finger at me and say ‘you never asked me about my spiritual condition’”. I have to admit, this is where I have come up short. However, I am working on it.

Thanks so much for sharing this truth. God blesses.

    • Noel, I think we all fall short when it comes to witnessing. We need to get a vision of the lost. I think it was Spurgeon who said “Some want to run a mission within the sound of the chapel’s bell. I want to run a mission within a yard of hell.”

May we have a vision of hell whenever we encounter someone. We are only guaranteed the second we are presently living. May we use it wisely.

Thank you, Mentor Angela, for always pointing us to Jesus and to the lost. When my step-dad (Dad to me!) was dying of cancer, several people came to Him with the gospel. I will never forget what he asked : Why didn’t anyone tell me sooner? ach!
    Love and prayers!

    • Thanks for adding that real-life experience Deb. Praise God someone DID tell him in time. I know I have been in the position, at funerals, of pointing the finger at myself and saying “You should have witnessed to him! You should have warned him! You should have told him of Jesus!”
May each blood-bought, adopted child of the living God be always ready to speak a word for Jesus before time runs out.

Angela, these are very sobering words, indeed. It is so true… how often do we ask others of their spiritual condition, or sad to say, how often do we not care? May the Lord help us all to be more concerned about the spiritual well being of others.

    • Rob, I fear that all too often we are so full of self and what we have to do (especially when shopping etc) that we do not HEAR Holy Spirit’s promptings and do not SEE that lonely, sad-looking person who needs a listening ear and who is open to hear the Word of Life. There is really no excuse, and certainly not when it comes to friends and family members. Woe is me if I preach NOT the Gospel!

    • So true J! There are degrees of evangelism. We are not all called to BE an evangelist, but we are ALL called to evangelise. We are all called to show forth His glory and to give account of our faith. When we allow Christ to shine forth from our lives, He WILL draw others to Himself, and He will use us to reach them. May we ALWAYS be open to His leading.
