PARALYSED with fear

One Step A man needed to cross a wide river which had frozen over.  He knew folk would be skating on it soon, but he was afraid the ice might still be too thin.  He tested it and it seemed very solid, but he wondered just how solid it might be in the middle of the river.  He decided to try and he could turn back if he found it too risky.
The first few metres were easy enough, but he soon became anxious.  He prodded the ice ahead and took another step.  Just one step at a time, prod ahead again, and then another.  He looked back and decided he must be getting near the middle of the river and started to imagine drowning in the icy water which might open up as the ice cracked under his feet.  He wondered if he should start crawling, but then thought that might put too large an area of heat on the ice, so continued prodding ahead and taking tiny steps.

He looked back again.  Yes, he must be half way by now.

He was almost exhausted, and was afraid to move he was so worried he could soon be in icy water.  He wouldn’t stand much chance if the ice cracked!  How foolish he had been to try it. Should he sit awhile?  No, he mustn’t. His body heat might just crack the ice under him.  He was almost paralysed with fear.

He looked back again, thinking to turn back – and then he saw, approaching at speed, two teams of dogs pulling heavily-laden sleds.  The driver skimmed past with a friendly wave and continued to the other side.

What a difference that made.  If the ice was solid enough for that load, it could surely hold him!  He proceeded without fear and soon reached the other side of the lake, feeling rather sheepish.

I remind myself of times I have been like that man.

I have trembled at every step, almost paralysed with fear
– no, not on ice which could crack –
but on the rock-solid, never-failing promises of God!
How foolish!

What does the Word of God say?

2 Corinthians 1:20   NKJV
For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen.

Psalm 119:160  NKJV
The entirety of Your word is truth,
and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

Psalm 89:34
My covenant I will not break,
nor alter the thing that is gone out of My mouth

Proverbs 29:25
The fear of man brings a snare,
but WHOEVER TRUSTS IN THE LORD SHALL BE SAFE.

Hebrews 10:23
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,
for HE WHO PROMISED IS FAITHFUL.

By resting completely on Him and taking hold of His promises, we can enjoy His peace, driving out the paralysing fear that holds us down, and hinders our witness and our service.

Isaiah 12:2
I will trust and not be afraid

I know a peace where there is no peace:
A calm when the wild winds blow:
A secret place,
Where face to face,
With the Master I may go.
And I find I’m strong,
Though the days be long,
And sorry the winds may blow:
When I seek His face In the secret place,
Of the Master whom I know.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

Oh what a blessing it is to know that when the Lord is in our lives, we truly have nothing to fear. He will make sure that the only situations that we face will be for our ultimate benefit and His glory. Lord bless you Angela.

    • Amen Rob. Although we might be in fearful situations, we have no reason to fear, for we KNOW the REALITY of His presence and of His love for us, and we know that He will undertake and use the situation to “grow” us and draw us closer to Himself and His goal for us.

We serve an incredibly amazing God who will ALWAYS work for our good.

Angela, my dear sister in Christ, your words are so very, very true. Your story reminds me a little of Peter when he walked on the water towards Jesus… he was doing fine until he realized the storm about himself, and took his eyes off the Lord Jesus.
We know that every blood bought child of God must rely on our Lord Jesus, the Father and His Holy Spirit to keep us going… however, even with a reborn new nature (praises!!!) we still have the flesh sometimes to kick us off balance. That is why the importance of giving each new day to our Loving God, so we may do His will and glorify Him in all we do. I know there are times when this is easier said than done, so I’m going to quit my comment here.
May you blessed dear one as much as you bless us with you words of truth.
    Much Love

    • Stephanie, the account of Peter walking on water is one of my favourites and a great challenge. Have you read John Ortberg’s book “If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat”? He asks some really challenging questions in that book.

“Easier said than done” – I totally agree, and wonder why we would ever doubt or fail, since we cannot count the number of times He has undertaken for us or the times when His Word has proven to be more than secure, or the number of times we have been so absolutely engulfed in His presence as we meet Him near the beginning of each day! His blessings are countless – and yet we too often fail. How foolish we are!

We serve an incredibly amazing God who DELIGHTS to bless us abundantly when we turn to Him.

  4. Wow! Angela, this is truly inspiring. I am standing on the promises of God. He has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake. One song writer says,”I am safe and secure in the arms of God”.

Thanks so much for sharing another exceptionally inspiring post. God blesses.

    • Hi Noel. It is such a blessing to KNOW that no matter what we face in life, God is right there with us and has supplied ALL we need to face it, knowing that as we submit to Him and trust Him, He will undertake for us and bring us through a more mature person.

We serve an incredibly amazing God who cannot deny His Word and will always undertake for His blood-bought, adopted children when we seek Him and His will. Praise Him for the REALITY of knowing victory in Jesus!

Cloudwatcher, this is a really good one! I especially appreciate your sharing the NKJ version of 2 Corinthians 1:20 because I have always loved the wording: “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen.”

By the way, I never thought to put a disclaimer on my blog posts about the advertising or videos that sometimes appear on my WordPress blog. I’m feeling lazy (read that as “fatigued”) these days, so would you mind of I copy yours?

    Blessings!

    • Thanks Anna, but all praise to the One who directs and enables. What a privilege it is to be used by the omnipotent, creator God to share His message!

Anna, by all means, feel free to use my disclaimer – or anything else here. I use Firefox as my browser, with an add-on which doesn’t show advs, so I don’t see them but I know they appear on most users’ pages. I was sadly surprised, when viewing my site on someone else’s computer, to see an adv for gambling, so I started adding the disclaimer.

I know I’m a little late responding to this, but I’m finally getting ready to get back to my blogging and went searching to see if you had responded to my request about this. I, too, use Firefox with an add-on that doesn’t show the adverts so I didn’t even realize they might be appearing in my blog posts. So thank you for allowing me to cut corners and use what you wrote. I so appreciate you and your teachings!

    • Thanks Milt. As you already know, the work we do here is only because of the One who leads us, gives us the material and enables us to write it to praise Him. Our prayer is that He will use it to encourage and challenge His own blood-bought, adopted children, and to reach out to those who don’t yet know Him.
