I WAS THERE!

I was thereREMBRANDT was considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age.  Rembrandt painted himself into his painting The Raising of the Cross (a portion of the whole painting shown here)

(Rembrandt is easily recognised by his turban which is historically incorrect, but often worn by painters to keep paint off their hair.)

Rembrandt vividly depicted the various attitudes of those about the cross, and painted himself there, as if almost apart from the scene, and yet in command of the action.

Why did Rembrandt paint himself into his painting of the crucifixion?

In his own words:
“I was there too!     I helped to crucify Jesus.     He died in MY place.”

The truth is that we were ALL there.
my sin
Christ died for ME!

Christ was sinless,
but He took MY sin on Himself

and He bore God’s punishment for MY sin.

Horatius Bonar, Scottish hymnwriter, expressed it like this . . .

‘Twas I that shed the sacred blood:
I nailed Him to the tree.
I crucified the Christ of God;
I joined the mockery.

Of all the shouting multitude,
I feel that I am one;
And in that din of voices rude
I recognise my own.

I WAS THERE!
I HELPED CRUCIFY CHRIST!

Romans 3:23
Everyone has sinned and falls short of the glory of God.

Isaiah 59:2
Your iniquities have separated you from your God
and your sins have hidden His face from you.

Romans 5:8
God demonstrates His own love towards us,
in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 Peter 3:18
Christ suffered once for sins, the Just for the unjust,
that He might bring us to God.

1 Peter 2:24
Christ Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree.

2 Corinthians 5:21
He (God) made Him (Christ) who knew no sin, to be sin for us,
so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Christ died for ME
What was my response?

For the first 22 years of my life, I didn’t know if there was a God.

Then God revealed Himself to me and gave me understanding and faith to believe.  I accepted Christ as my Saviour who gave Himself for me and reconciled me to God.

For the last 54 years of my life, my God has been my Everything.  I am His blood-bought, adopted, greatly loved child and He supplies all I need.  In Christ, I have forgiveness of sins.  I have His abiding presence.  I enjoy His peace and joy in all circumstances.  He changed me and continues to change me.  One day soon, I will be presented faultless before Him – not because of anything I have done, but only because of His work in me – and I will live with Him and praise Him for all eternity.

Christ died for YOU
What is YOUR response?

Jeremiah 33:3
Call unto Me and I will answer you,
and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.

Acts 16:31
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

Angela, I really enjoyed this post. As you know we live out in the sticks, but if I ever get a chance I love to pop in important art galleries, for a period many of the best artists painted precious littloe other than Biblical scenes. Choose the right gallery and it’s possible to find more than one painting of the same scene – Christ in “The Garden” for example. These often prove thought provoking, and show an understanding of scripture. One of my favourites is in Musee D’Orsay where the two disciples who’d been on the Emmaus Road appear to be in a mad rush. I’d never seen the painting before, or read the title but the artist totally captured the scene – I was thrilled to read the small print and find my “hunch” was spot on.

    • I can’t say I am a lover of religious art, but I do like the biographies of some of the artists and their accounts of what led them to paint what they did.
When it comes to art I am a realist, but I guess that is in line with my whole being. I rejoice in the REALITY of a personal relationship with the living, omnipotent, triune God, and the REALITY of His presence and work in my life.

one of my favorite songs to sing at Easter is “the day He wore my crown” I can only begin to grasp the love it took to go to the cross and stay there for the sins of mankind. What love such wondrous love!

  4. Thanks for this wonderful post and testimony. I was there also! How painful to realize that those stripes, crown of thorns and the ultimate painful death on the cross was not only caused by me, but saved me! But I was also at the empty tomb, and on the mount of olives and seen Him going up into the clouds. And I will be there when He returns! O what a glorious day that will be!

    • What a glorious day indeed!
We are one day closer and while I rejoice at that thought, my heart is burdened for family and friends who do not know Him/are not ready for His return.

    • Thank you for that testimony Debbie. There is no one like God. We will never cease to praise Him for all He has done for us – not because of anything in us, but only because of His great love, mercy and grace!

Praise and thanksgiving to the Almighty Creator of the universe. The LORD God–the Father for sending His only Son to die for all mankind. Washing away the “blackness” of sin from our hearts, with the “crimson” blood of the pure Lamb of God–our Lord Jesus Christ and making our hearts “white” as snow. There is no other way… none…nada to be released from eternal death into the presence of our LORD God and King Jesus.
Wonderfully written and I thank God for you sister Angela.
    Continuing to watch and wait…

Oh, how sad those words make me: “I WAS THERE! I HELPED CRUCIFY CHRIST!” As so often happens, the truth does hurt — in this case, a lot! But the sadness is overshadowed by the amazing joy of knowing that I am walking with Him now and am utterly thankful for His ultimate sacrifice on my behalf. Amen!

    • I agree Anna. I cannot comprehend how or why God would shower His love on us, even when we had no thought of Him, but I priase Him for the REALITY of knowing Him and the REALITY of the experience of His love and direction in my life. I was guilty, but He took my sin and guilt and gave me His righteousness! Amazing!

    • We serve an incredibly amazing God who delights to supply our every need according to the riches of His abundance. If we ‘have not’ it is not His fault. He is everything and He gives freely to those who follow Him.

Hallelujah! Jesus paid the price and all I have to do is accept him. I’m so glad that my salvation is not dependent on me. If it was, I could never earn it. Thank you God for Jesus’ finished work!

    Like

    • Amen! Even the best-living person who ever lived could not earn it . . . but by the grace of God, and through the finished work of Christ at Calvary, we are given faith to believe and are adopted into God’s own family, safe for eternity.
