“AND THEN SOME” – the secret of success?

A top business executive was asked the secret of success.  He replied that the difference between average and successful people could be summed up in three words “and then some”.

The successful people did what was expected “and then some”
They met their obligations and responsibilities “and then some”
They were thoughtful and considerate of others “and then some”
They were good friends and helpful co-labourers “and then some”
They could be counted on in an emergency “and then some”
Can that “and then some” or that “little bit extra” make a difference?

Let’s consider water.
It is the “and then some”
that changes WATER into STEAM.
At 211°F degrees or 99°C
water will make a cup of coffee.
Add just one more degree,
and the same water, changed to steam,
will power a locomotive or a steamship or a factory!

How do we approach our Christian responsibilities?
Can it be said that we do them well – “and then some”?

Would that “and then some” – that little bit extra –
make the difference in our witness to those we meet?

Would that “and then some” – that little bit extra –
make a difference to the effectiveness of our local Church
to reach the community with the Gospel?

Would that “and then some” – that little bit extra –
make a difference to the life of a missionary toiling on a foreign field?

Would that “and then some” – that little bit extra –
make the difference needed to turn the world upside down?

There are many people in my life who need to see Jesus in me:
people who need my “and then some”

Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men
that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Philippians 2:13,15
It is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure . . . That you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation,
among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life.

There are many people in my life who need to see Jesus in me:
people who need my “and then some”

We are the only Bible
The careless world will read;
We are the sinner’s gospel,
We are the scoffer’s creed.
We are the Lord’s last message,
Given in deed and word:
What if the type is crooked?
What if the print is blurred?
Annie Johnson Flint

There are many people in my life who need to see the living Jesus in me:
people who need my “and then some”

1 Corinthians 15:58
Be steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Colossians 3:23
Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not as to men.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

oh if all those people who have said “it is good enough” would get their hands on this blog. Good word!

    • I am afraid I am sometimes guilty of ‘good enough’ but it is usually in connection with things like cleaning the oven or tidying the cupboards. I hope I never use it in connection with the Lord’s service. He alone is worthy of our complete and absolute praise, followed through in our service.

      What an amazing God!

  3. I certainly fall short in always presenting who God is and what He’s about. Fortunately I believe in the God of second chances. Thanks for the reminding nudge.

    • I’m sure we all fall short. We all need to be stay in constant communication with Holy Spirit, and be ready to respond whenever He prompts, using His words, deeds and attitudes. People need to SEE Jesus working in us and the difference HE makes to our lives.

“And then some” seems to be a scarce commodity and a dying breed these days. It pains my heart.
A little more may not mean much to us, but it could mean the world to another.
    Wonderfully enlightening and inspiring post.
God bless your heart for sharing with us.
    Grateful

    • Thanks Ann. Considering the abundance of blessings with which the Lord showers us, our little “and then some” is nothing by comparison. Besides, anything we do is only by His grace. We could achieve nothing worthwhile without Him – and it is such a privilege to be used by Him!

God bless you as you add your “and then some” to all the Lord calls you to do.

      What an amazing God!

  5. Oh my God! This is really inspiring and enlightening. I’m so excited to come across it. “and then some” is beautiful, not necessarily because it will place me above my peers (I’m not interested in beating anyone), but because it would enable me explore my potentials and achieve much more. Christ declared us the light of the world; I love that part. If I’m light, then I’ve got to shine bright. It doesn’t really matter how bright others shine, I’ve got to shine my brightest and inspire others to be their own best. My success is unique to me and it is linked to my own design. Everyone must settle to their best, because that’s where they can beat the expectations of others and be attributed with the “and then more” property. Beautiful post! :)

    • Thank you teecee. I admire your enthusiasm and your desire to use your potential.

Yes, Christ said He is the Light of the world and that WE are lights in the world. He told us to let our light shine – that is, to let the Light of Christ within us shine forth from us, so that they will see HIM and praise Him.

When I consider all He has done for me, and all He IS DOING for me on a moment by moment basis, how can I do other than my very best – ‘and then some’? He alone is worthy and I praise Him for the great privilege of being used by Him.

      What an amazing God!

A great thought Angela. A message so needed. In our days we are called to excel and the temptation is always to settle for “Good Enough”.

    • I have to admit there are times I settle for “good enough” but they mostly concern things like cleaning the oven and tidying the cupboards, or deciding that dusting will do this week: I’ll polish next week.

However, in the Lord’s work, I try to keep to the motto I gave my boys throughout their school life – printed on every one of their books:
      Good, better, best.
      Never let it rest
      Until your good is better,
      And your better is best!

Thank you for such wonderful encouragement! You have truly given us the secret to success in our Kingdom walks with the Lord! To be all that the Lord has called us to be, depends on whether or not we are willing to do that “extra little bit ” as unto the Lord! Had He not given His ALL for us, where would we be? Thank you again, for this inspired teaching! Wonderful! May the Lord bless you, abundantly!

    • Thank you Paulette. My gracious Lord constantly shows me His ‘and then some’. Of course, we saw this in His purchase of our salvation, but He continues, showering us with the abundance of His love, mercy and grace. His blessings are non-stop. Can I do other than give my ‘all’ in response – not because I have to, but out of thankfulness and a grateful heart for the way He has changed my life and given me Himself!

  9. Angela, this is a powerful message. I agree with you. Not only do we need to spend more time with God, we also need to spend more time laboring for Him. The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. God should occupy first place in our lives. When He is at the center of our lives, His light will shine through us and illuminate others.

Worshiping God should be a passion–not just a chore or an act. The apostles spread the gospel with passion–intense passion. They go above and beyond “and then some”. I have never seen a salesperson who is passive about the product he sells. An effective salesperson is always ready to go above “and beyond and then some” to keep customers happy. We are God sales people. We must prepare to go above and beyond “and then some for Him”.

Thanks so much for sharing this message. It could not have come at a better time. God blesses.

    • I agree Noel. I don’t mind at all if people say I am always talking about my God and what He has done for me. Should it be otherwise? We should shout it from the housetops! No offence to football lovers, but if they can get excited about a football game, I have eleventy-eight times the reason to get excited about the difference my amazing triune God makes in my life and all that He does for me.

      What an amazing God!

I actually had a customer write in today congratulating me on the way we looked after her. We did what we said we would do (why wouldn’t we) and got her business because suppliers in Ireland wouldn’t even bother to acknowledge an email. Sometimes “and then some” isn’t so difficult.

    Angela,

The desire to give a little bit extra is based upon our love for Him. From a human standpoint it is my love for my wife that drives me to do more for her than what she asks of me. How much more should my life be driven to do more for my Lord than what He simply asks of me? This is one of several things that I should look at to determine the level of my love for the Lord. Am I doing more than necessary… or just the bare minimum of my obligation to Him?

Wonderful posting once agina my friend. It is always a blessing. You are in my daily prayers.

    • Rob, thank you for adding that wonderful comparison of love for a spouse. It really says a lot.
Considering all that my loving triune God has done for me and is doing for me and will do for me, my love for Him should be constantly overflowing and the “and then some” should be to the max.

We serve an incredibly amazing God!

    • Thank you Anna. The “and then some” is really an indication of our love for Him and is our delight, but I know I need to extend this love for Him towards people I meet, and have that same concern about their eternal destiny that He has. People need Jesus, and where will they see Him if not in the lives of His people?

Thank you for a great illustration of Biblical truth. The little bit extra is birthed out of love for the Lord. It is easy when our desire is to please our Bridegroom because of his great love for us.

Thank you, mentor Angela, for encouraging us to do that little extra bit. The comparison with water making a cup of coffee or powering a steam engine or factory was really enlightening. :) There is that in the world which tries to tell us to do more for ourselves and less for others . ..that we deserve a break . .that someone else can do it. Oh the joy of not listening to that voice of deception and just doing the “and then some” . .. to see others encouraged in Christ and to Christ. I think once we are on to this, it becomes so natural for us to do . . not a burden. In fact if I am not doing the little bit extra, I don’t feel right!
God bless you as others do see Jesus in you today!

    • Yes, Debbie, the world constantly tries to tell us the opposite, but our gracious God rewards us abundantly when we serve Him with all our being – and as you say, it is never a burden, but a joy and privilege. We LOVE to serve Him and nothing is too much.

We serve an amazing God who delights to pour out His blessings on His blood-bought, adopted children (and I can see bucketsfull on you today!)
