A ROCK IN THE WRONG PLACE

my rock

I have been away for a couple of months, making medical history.

Trying to cut a long story short, I was admitted to hospital for a gall bladder operation but the surgeon was unable to perform the surgery. A CT Scan revealed the stone had burst from the gall bladder, through the stomach and lodged in the small intestine on the lower left side of the body. I was airlifted to the capital for specialised surgery. There, a large stone was found in the duodenum and removed, and it was thought the problem was solved.

NOT SO!  After 17 days of intensive pain and AF (atrial fibrillation of the heart, with the resting pulse rate at 140-153) as a result of the trauma to the body, a rock was found completely blocking the small intestine. The rock turned out to be 3cm diameter and 4.6 cm long. The surgeon said an hour later would have been too late. It had torn the intestine which was about ready to burst. This type of rock is known as Bouveret’s Syndrome and is most often found post-mortem. The majority of doctors and surgeons never encounter one in their lifetimes, so many ‘visitors’ came to see the evidence. My case is being written up in medical journals and is the basis for a project by a group of med students.

Now, after three operations and several weeks, I am beginning to regain my normal health, though I am still unable to sweep, mop, lift, stretch etc and I tire very quickly – certainly not my usual lifestyle as I have enjoyed almost perfect health all my life.

Looking back over those weeks I can see at least three major “circumstances” – things that happened beyond explanation – other than that God was in control and stepped in on my behalf. I hasten to add that this was not because I deserved or merited His intervention, but solely because of His great mercy, grace, love and providence for His adopted child.

On entering hospital I declared (Psalm 27:1)
The Lord is my light and my salvation: whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?”

Some time later the truth of verse 2 hit me –
“When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh . . .”

[This is what was happening as that rock tore at my insides,
but my God was true to His Word] . . .
“my enemies and foes stumbled and fell”

THE ETERNAL GOD IS MY REFUGE
AND UNDERNEATH ARE THE EVERLASTING ARMS
Deuteronomy 33:27

I apologise for not being able to keep in touch but I now hope to get back to commenting and posting, at least for a short time most days.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

    • Thank you. I am now back to normal – though ‘normal’ isn’t a word I choose to use of myself.
      As Vance Havner said:
“Most Christians live far below the standard set by Christ.
We are so SUB-NORMAL that if we were to become NORMAL,
People would consider we were ABNORMAL”

    Angela,

All we can say is “welcome back” . So sorry to hear about all you went through… but I praise the Lord for His faithfulness and blessings to you during that time. Deut 33:27 is one of my favorite verses as well. I look to it often during times of struggles.

Welcome back once again…. looking forward to be blessed from your blog… the Lord is so good!

    Dearest Angela
    You have been sorely missed.
So great to have you back and so thankful to know your story has a ‘happy ending’. May His name be glorified even as medical history is rewritten!
The Rock of all ages truly was your support and under-girding. Thankful that the hand of Jehovah Rapheka was upon you.
    Blessings

Phew, that was close! Glad to see you are back in action, and who ever wanted to use a mop anyhow? Where you awake when airlifted, if so it must have felt most dramatic. Good to hear you are recovering Praise The Lord, you diligently bless many, may you continue to do so.

    • I would LOVE to use a mop! My floors need it – but they will have to wait a little longer.

Yes, I was awake but I was on morphine so much of it seemed unreal. It was only a one hour flight in a small RFDS (Royal Flying Doctor Service) plane – two stretchers in a tiny area, pilot and nurse.

An amazing account! I’ve also missed you and am glad you are back.
The Deuteronomy reference is a beautiful reminder of God’s care and love for His children.
