YOUR CHOICE: freedom or bondage

Your ChoiceEveryone longs for freedom, but for many people the pursuit of freedom leads to bondage.

It takes no time to think of areas in which this is true.

One might follow his freedom of choice to drink alcohol or try marihuana or other drugs, with absolutely no thought of bondage to drunkenness or drug addiction.  A young lady might exercise her freedom of choice to engage in sexual activities, only to find she has lost her freedom to a teenage pregnancy or a transmitted disease. People shout that pornography is a matter of choice but child molesters admit their addiction started with viewing pornography.

Henrietta Mears, respected Bible teacher, knew the secret of true freedom.  When teaching young people, she explained,

“A bird is free in the air, but place a bird in water and it loses its freedom. A fish is free in the water, but leave it on the sand and it perishes simply because it is out of its realm. In just the same way, a Christian is free when walking in the will of God, obeying God’s commands.  This is just as natural a realm for the child of God as the water is for the fish, or as the air is for the bird.”

Or as another explained:

“We humans have perfect freedom in the law of gravity. It keeps us safe and we have freedom of movement.  But when we step OUTSIDE of the freedom of the law of gravity, we become ENSLAVED by the same law.  That is, if we step off a cliff top, we are BOUND by gravity and we are plunged downward to the rocks and destruction below.”

As Christians,
We should feel OUT OF OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT in the world.

We should never enjoy
watching, listening or participating in worldly pleasures.

Our natural response to our loving heavenly Father
should be willing and joyful obedience.

After all, we know He wants only the very best for us
and that His best in found in walking in His will.

#   Inside the will of God there is no failure.
Outside the will of God there is no success.
#  Doing the will of God leaves me no time for disputing His plans.
#  The most fitting response to undeserved blessings
is unreserved obedience.

#  To enjoy the promises of God we need to obey the commands of God.
#  All heaven is waiting to help those who will discover the will of God
and do it.

The Master’s will, for this I pray, whatever it may be!
I do not want to miss Your best: reveal it Lord to me.
My own desires will lead me wrong. I must consult my God.
His counsel will be justified when all the way I’ve trod.

O soul of mine, delight in Him: His Word discern, obey;
The plan you seek to know will then unfold from day to day.
My ALL, O Lord, I give to You: my body, mind and soul!
May all the days that lie ahead be under Your control!

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

  1. Angela, your illustration of the bird, fish and Christian is great. Really makes one stop and think.

And I liked your poem at the end. Are you a poet too?

    Angela,

What a very controversial subject! In today’s time of political correctness, we are told that everyone has the “right” to live as they please and do as they wish.

It is a sad day when we no longer recognize God’s authority over our lives and seek to live within the confines of His will for our lives. Just as you say… by stepping outside the bounds of His will, excusing it by saying we want our “freedom”, only leads to spiritual bondage.

Our only true freedom lies in submission to His will, by coming to Him for salvation, and then seeking to live lives pleasing to Him. It is only then that we find peace, contentment and true freedom!

Thanks for clarifying the Bible teahings on this important subject.

May the Lord continue to use you.

    • You summed it up perfectly Rob: “Our only true freedom lies in submission to His will, by coming to Him for salvation, and then seeking to live lives pleasing to Him. It is only then that we find peace, contentment and true freedom!
How true! In His will there is perfect freedom, accompanied by peace, joy and His abiding presence. How foolish we are at times to choose otherwise – but thankfully our loving heavenly Father draws us back to Himself.
