WHY BELIEVE? Is God real? Is the Bible true?

Why believe the Bible?

I have been asked many times WHY I believe in God and the Bible.

I didn’t believe in God for the first 22 years of my life, but I have known loved and served the living Creator God, my loving heavenly Father, through the Lord Jesus Christ, for the last 52 years. In that time He has been my Companion, Counsellor and Guide; my Strength and Enabler; my Challenger and Encourager; my Teacher and Friend – my Everything.

WHY DO I BELIEVE IN GOD?

Well, why do I believe in my husband to whom I have been happily married for 50 years? Because I have 50 years of EXPERIENCING His presence, his love and provision for me and our family. My GOD is JUST AS REAL to me as is my husband, my sons, or any living person.  I EXPERIENCE the REALITY of God in my life.

WHY DO I BELIEVE THE BIBLE?
For much the same reason – the REALITY of the EXPERIENCE of its TRUTHS in practical ways in my life.  I know that won’t satisfy the sceptics, so here are a few other reasons.

The Bible - the Word of God

PROPHECY
The Bible records many hundreds of prophecies concerning Jesus Christ and many other people, kings, nations, towns, events, buildings.  EVERY prophecy, although written many hundreds of years BEFORE the event, came true in EVERY tiny detail.   I repeat: EVERY prophecy, in EVERY detail.  Only the living GOD could give men the prophecies to speak and record years before the events.

ARCHAEOLOGY
Many events recorded in the Bible have been disputed and ridiculed by men over the centuries. A great number of these have been proven to be correct when archaeologists unearthed remains EXACTLY as recorded in the Bible. There are hundreds of such occurrences but I’ll mention ONE of them.
HEZEKIAH’S TUNNEL, recorded in the Bible about 700BC was doubted and ridiculed until 1838 when it was uncovered. In 1880 an inscription was found in the tunnel, describing its building just as recorded in the Bible centuries earlier.
Today, tourists walk through that tunnel.

SCIENCE
The Bible is not a book of science, but where it touches on scientific things, it is accurate. Once again we find that things only recently discovered by scientists were recorded hundreds of years earlier in the Bible.  These include facts about thunder, lightning, stars, the wind, the tides, ocean currents, snow, fingerprints, blood, animals, birds – and the list goes on.

To an honest person these things are proof, but to one who does not WANT to believe, NOTHING will satisfy.

About meetingintheclouds

I am Cloudwatcher, a 76 year old Christian lady, happily married to a wonderful man for over 50 years. We have five wonderful sons, all with at least one University degree and in top positions in their chosen fields. One son is still single but four have found perfect wives and they have given us five lovely grandchildren. I was born in England and while I'm proud of my English heritage, I am doubly proud to be a true-blue, fair-dinkum Aussie. My husband and I are committed Christians whose first priority is to love and serve our risen Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. My life story will tell of my journey from abuse to peace. I suffered 22 years of abuse, being constantly told I was totally evil and an ugly freak: no one would ever want me, so I might as well do the world a favour and kill myself.

    Hi angela,

My favourite proof is in Isaiah40:22.

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.

Years and years people argued that the earth was flat. Isaiah was ahead of all the scientists. These words weren’t prophetic in the same way as “Unto us a child is born”, but they must have sounded silly before Christ came….

    • Yes, I have used that too and the many scientific proofs in Job.
I have found that the unearthing of Hezekiah’s tunnel has caused many to think or rethink their opinion of the Bible. The FACTS speak volumes. The Bible had been IN PRINT for centuries before the tunnel was discovered. IF man had written the Bible, how could the tunnel be found and how could the inscription in it match the Biblical record?

Great post! I too have been asked numerous times about why I believe. Only God can give a peace that passes all understanding and a joy in the midst of painful situations. I love the verse in Romans “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (15:13) Overflowing with hope that is intermingled with joy and peace — ya just can’t make that stuff up and true believers have it.

    • Hi Gloria. (I know a few called Gloria and they are all very nice ladies)

Yes, the blessings of peace, joy and certain hope are all we need. Nothing can counter the REALITY of the EXPERIENCE we have of the ABIDING PRESENCE of the Lord in our lives.

We do not need tangible evidence. We do not need “proofs” of the authenticity of the Word, but they do bolster our faith. I post them here not so much for Christians as for unbelievers and doubters – to give them something to challenge their thoughts.

The Bible had been IN PRINT for hundreds of years before Hezekiah’s tunnel was unearthed and the inscription inside the tunnel matched the record in the Word – recorded more than 2000 years before the tunnel was found. An honest man MUST be challenged by this.

Glad I found this site through pbus1. Somewhere along the way I learned that even the most scholarly intellectual skeptic has faith. None of us has the option of whether we have faith or not. The only choices ultimately are (1.) FAITH in God or (2.) FAITH in no God. Your case is clear and well put. People do not stay away from the Lord on account of intellectual reasons or facts. It becomes ultimately a matter of the will, a matter of sheer faith. And the person who says “We will not have this man rule over us” has chosen another ruler, instead. And in doing so, that person takes on a far greater set of problems which have no explanation than even the simplest Bible believer ever can imagine. Good work. Hope I’ll hear more from you. Also, I’d welcome your dropping by my place anytime: Scripturestudent.wordpress.com or my websiste: http://www.Godscomebackkids.com. You are blessed and a blessing. ~dk

    • Hi dk. Welcome.
You are right. Everyone exercises faith every day – as the well used example: we sit on a chair without first checking its soundness. We commit ourselves to the chair in confidence.

I agree that an intellectual argument will NOT win someone to faith in Christ, but it often DOES cause them to think and to question their beliefs. I have been amazed at what some people believe concerning the Bible. I have been told that King James WROTE the Bible. Many just blindly “believe” without ANY basis or thought. Hopefully a few facts about the Bible will cause them to question what they believe.

It is so vitally important, that we which have been born again, of the water and of the spirit, strive to live a life above reproach. We are living epistles, read among men. We must practice what we preach. We don’t want to be guilty of sending mixed messages, and thereby standing in the way of sinners. For some, the Saints of God are the only epistles that are read. We must let our lights so shine before all men, that they may see our good works, and as a result, glorify the Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

    • AMEN!
I think it is such a pity that the word “Christian” has taken on so many meanings. Just because people are born into a so-called “Christian” nation, they accept the tag even though they have no understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ. People call themselves Christian merely because they are NOT Moslem or Hindu or any other “religion.”

This creates the problem and Christianity (REAL Christianity) is judged by those who know just wear a name tag.

We who have a living relationship with Christ MUST lift Him up and be LIGHTS in the world of darkness, showing the REALITY of our experience.
